I’m engaged!

posted by admin

in cool, dating, mmm

OK, this post is a few weeks late  :)   I was debating whether or not to post anything too personal on here, but it’s a huge deal and I’m really happy about it so I don’t care who knows.

One thing I realized this weekend is that I’m going to have to give up the snooze button on my alarm clock starting in August.  Sooo…I’m going to start reading up on tips for better sleeping so I can work on falling asleep at a normal time and waking up the first time the alarm goes off.  Take notes guys…relationships are tough!

wind-lit solar LEDs

These pretty little LED lights were originally battery powered, but now run on solar power.  During the day they absorb energy from the sun and save it, then light at the hint of a breeze at night.  Turned on by wind and powered by the sun…pretty cool.  Unfortunately not for sale yet, but I’m going to keep an eye out for them in the future.

Here are more details, courtesy of Inhabitat:

“The light is composed of a glass, bell-shaped, vessel, that holds the LED light, circuitry, and solar panel. Wax holds the electronics inside the glass vessel and disperses the emitting light. Paper is suspended from the center of the circuitry, and as the strip of paper is blown, the light turns on. The light will burn depending on the weather that day – more sun charges the battery longer and stronger winds keep it on.”

Happy April Fools day!

For your viewing pleasure, here’s a link to the 10 Best April Fools’ Gags, compliments of Wired Magazine.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

1976 At precisely 9:47 am on April 1, Pluto will pass behind Jupiter, causing a brief reduction in Earth’s gravitational pull. Astronomer Patrick Moore urges his BBC Radio audience to jump into the air at that exact moment to experience a floating sensation. At 9:48, dozens of light-headed listeners begin calling the station to report their success.”

2003 Bill Gates is dead, shot by a lone gunman at a charity event in Los Angeles. After three South Korean networks broadcast the story on local TV, ensuing panic triggers a 1.5 percent drop in the Seoul stock exchange — a value loss of $3 billion. Just another Windows-related crash.”

Do I need to switch to Apple?

Creative is facing a major outcry from customers after putting a stop to one man who created drivers to make products Vista-compatible.

A programmer, “Daniel_K”, had created drivers for X-Fi sound cards and Vista when, a year after the OS was released, Creative has failed to release updates themselves.  Asking merely for donations, he was recently hushed when Creative told him he was “stealing” by taking their products and altering them.

As a new Vista user, I’ve faced issues with several programs after only a couple of weeks.  And I’m still waiting for more…with almost every application I install, I get a warning that there are known bugs with the app and Vista.  I think keeping up with new operating systems and providing updates is the least these companies can do.

Anyway, supposedly iPods work fine with Vista.  I might need to make the switch when I get a new mp3 player.  Not because I like Vista, but because I like companies that provide updates when updates are needed.  We’ll see though…I’m normally anti-Apple.

cheaters – xbox live edition

If you’ve maxed your scores by hacking your 360’s save files, you might want to go ahead and change them back before your gamer profile looks like this:

xbox 360 cheater mccheat profile

Microsoft is starting to take action against all xbox live cheaters, including resetting your entire Gamerscore to 0, inability to regain past achievements (including legit ones), and you’ll be permanently labeled a cheater in your profile.

This doesn’t bother me so much, being that the only game I play on xbox live is Uno  :)

You might be a Generation Y baby if…the design above looks familiar.  If it didn’t cost $2000 it’d be on its way to my apartment as we speak.

Designed by Brave Space, this piece is from their “Tetrad” collection.

save on gas by…driving like a granny?

posted by admin

I was reading an article last night called “10 Tips: Steer clear of crippling gas prices“, so of course I was intrigued when I saw the title.  After browsing the tips, there was only one that really pertained to me.  Here it is:

Slow down — and drive fast the right way. Want to improve your gas mileage by a whopping 15 percent? Try driving 55 mph instead of 65 mph. You’ll also see improvements if you avoid quick starts and sudden braking whenever possible. In addition, if your car has overdrive gearing or cruise control, remember to make use of it as soon as your speed is high enough.”

I’ve decided to give this one a try, for at least the long 15.2 mile stretch I drive on 50 every morning.  Typically I go around 80mph (speed limit is 65)…there’s rarely any traffic so my lead foot kicks in.  I did it last night and this morning, and so far the results kind of suck.  By far, I was the slowest on the road, coasting slowly in the right lane while everyone else sped around me (or tailed me obsessively).

For the rest of the week I’ll continue with my experiment, and see if it truly makes a difference in mileage.  Doing some quick math I figured out that driving fast saves me about 2.6 minutes (on that stretch of road alone).  I drive that stretch twice a day 5 days a week (minus the 3 weeks of vacation/sick time I get)…that’s 26 minutes a week, and 21.23 hours a year.  So far not worth it!

I’ve been meaning to do this ever since the Silpada jewelry party I went to, back when I was fiscal fasting.  At the time I was tempted to buy a bracelet that alternated pearl and silver beads, but it was $37 and I was on a strict no-spending week.  So instead I waited patiently for the right things to go on sale at Joann fabrics and Michaels, and voila!

Here is the original:

Here’s the Katie-imitation:

Not bad, eh?  Cheap to make and cute enough to wear.

Before today I’d spend awhile scouring a list of my favorite sites, hungry for any new/interesting news.  Then I finally (better late than never, right?) decided to add all of them to my google reader via RSS feeds.  So, here it is (no, the sites listed aren’t the only ones I read, just the ones with updates since the last time I’ve checked them):

Yes, that is a dude kissing Doogie Howser.  He’s been out for awhile though  :)
