When my friends told me Jon and Kate Gosselin were coming to their church last weekend in Waynesburg, PA, I was PSYCHED at the chance to see them. The drive is about 4.5 hours, but totally worth it to see my friend AND hear the parents of sextuplets and twins tell their story in person.
What do I like about the show?
- the kids are adorable
- I grew up in a family of 8 kids and some of their interactions remind me of my childhood
- my fiance kinda reminds me of Jon
Visiting my friends and their 1-yr old daughter was great! We made the trek to PA early on Saturday with plans to hang out on Saturday, attend church on Sunday, go to lunch, and hang out a bit more before heading home.
Jon and Kate were part of two speaking events that day. One was an hour to tell their story to the church members (which is what I went to), and another a few hours later that required buying $7 tix. The latter sold out at 500 people. Although I chose the free event, I thought I’d support them by buying their new book and gave to the donation bucket that was passed around after they spoke. This made more sense for us since the later event would’ve left us driving home very late at night with work the next morning.
As church began, I looked around and noticed that the couple was nowhere to be found. This was pretty understandable since their presence could distract from the ceremony itself, which seemed to be about 70% weekly churchgoers and 30% guests. When it came time for the sermon, the pastor introduced Jon & Kate and an overhead projector flashed images of the Gosselins over the past 4 years. Finally it was time to see the couple I’ve loved watching for the past year!
They walked out and took their seats. Rather than doing what was initially expected, they opted to do something “different” and have a question and answer session for the entire hour. I was a bit thrown off when they didn’t at least spend 5 minutes to sum up their story. After all, several of the audience were simply church members who had never heard of “Jon & Kate plus 8″. Although most of their answers were short (Ex: Q- “Where are your kids right now?” A- “At home.”), there were a few answers that reminded me of the Jon and Kate I see on TV, joking back and forth on their “interview” couch.
When the hour was up, they made their exit and church ended. Clutching my book excitedly, I waited in the hallway with another 15 or so fans, hoping to say “hello” and possibly snag an autograph. 10-15 mins later the door opened and out they came, glancing indifferently our way before walking the other way, out the back door, and straight into their car.
A bit turned off, my mood lifted again when the (amazingly nice) youth pastor took my book and said he’d try to get me an autograph in the afternoon session.
I know I shouldn’t expect anything, but I was a bit disappointed. They said they travel to various churches to “tell their story”, but while they were here they treated it as if it were just a job, and one they only do for the money. They did only what they had to, and I didn’t see much friendliness from either of them along the way. I know they don’t have to say hello to their fans, but without us they wouldn’t have the show. PLUS they received quite a bit of $$ from the donations, ticket sales, and pictures. Unfortunately for me I assumed they’d be much more friendly…maybe even thankful for the opportunity to earn money and “tell their story” as they claimed they wanted to do.
I can’t decide whether I want to watch the show anymore. The kids will always be cute, but I can’t say I have quite the admiration for Jon & Kate that I had a week ago.

I agree sstephy, those hours are way to long to have a camera in those kids faces. If Mady has behavior problems that is probably why. Kate needs to get her priorities straight and let those kids be kids for a while. Elise, noone is jealous of Kate, who would be jealous of someone the whole country thinks of as a con-artist and cild exploiter? And that is exactly what she is!
I feel sad about what those little kids are going through and will go through for the rest of their lives. Have you ever been seen on TV while sitting on the potty or having a shower? Have you ever been on TV while being yelled at by your siblings and parents? Is there a show on TV that shows your mother being extremely mean to your father, and your father turning into a pitiful piece of humanity? These little kids lives are now showing just this way, weekly, and on DVD for eternity. How CAN these parents not see the harm these children are going through?
i feel bad for mady and cara especially. i read kate’s book and almost the entire thing is just about the sextuplets. i think all the attention on the sextuplets is rubbing off on cara and mady (mady in particular). she seems like a brat and i can understand why! in all the photo shoots the family does, not all of them look happy, esp. mady and cara. i wish they would have ended their show at season one, for the kids’ sake. then do some yearly specials. their season has been running since january! i feel sad for the gosselin kids. i’d like to see how they are acting in ten years.
I agree with you Amy. I admit that I do not like J&K, but I really do feel sorry for the kids, especially the twins. Mady is acting out because of the attention that is given to the tups. Cara sometimes seems so sad and withdrawn. I hate it when J&K calls Mady ‘the problem child’ they don’t seem to get it. IMHO, Kate prefers the tups because they are the main bread winners. Kate couldn’t be home much anymore with all of the speaking engagements and book signings and not to mention product endorsments. She needs to do what is best and let these kids lead a normal childhood.

Kate has created her OWN problems, its her attitude that rubs people the wrong way. Everbody has to walk on egg shells around her, including family and filming crew. She is full of herself, she acts like she is the only person who ever had kids LOL She is NOT an EXPERT at anything.
NOBODY is jealous..who would WANT to be around her??
The re runs are entertaining because you get to watch her make an a** of herself over and over again. Kate just doesnt get it.

The difference between Jodi and Kate is Jodi has class and Kate doesnt.
I think Jodi and Beth need to write a tell all book and then we could see what has really happened in that house. In a recent interview Kate said she wasn’t worried about the kids futures. I think it was in http://www.babble.com

Before I read some of these comments I thought that the money j&k were making was being used to improve the kids lives for example college funds and to buy a bigger house for the kids to have more space. My only question is that can anyone tell me what else j&k could be using the money for cause if they’re using the money to better their kids lives is that really being greedy in that all they want is more and more money for just the couple? Just wondering what people could tell me. And I was wondering if anyone knew if jk paid for the house themselves cause if they didn’t I have to admit that that’s a little sketchy just by itself because it’s not like they are hurting or anything like that right now.

I watched the “Soup” episode to see if Kate would have a melt down, and sure enough when Jon put the rug down Kate goes nuts, its not like he was shaking the heck out of it! Kates an arrogant snot!

The only thing I have seen about the house is that it is in a revokable trust in the name of their attorney. I just saw that info on GWOP. I think Kate’s attitude is one of the worse ones I have ever saw. If she is like that on camera, then just imagine what she is like when no one is around.
Lisa, Kates attitude is awful. Everytime she opens her mouth she spews complaints and negative things. It gets old fast. I would imagine its no longer fun for TLC to film her.
Just a note here about the potty chairs she used.
There is a product that fits right on the toilet with a smaller toliet seat, it has little hand rails and two steps, and it has rubber grips for tile floor or carpeting so it cant slip, for potty training, it works great and has been on the market for years and years. (like 30 years) Very easy for kids to climb up on. If an adult needs to use the bathroom they just lift it up and set it aside. That way there is no emptying potty chairs, and the kids just flush. It works great.
I think Kate just like the drama and busywork of emptying all those potties.
After all she is the ultimate drama queen.

I bet that when some of the fanatical fans see the new house, a lot of them will change their mind about how poverty stricken these people really are. I can’t wait to see the reactions. I only hope they have enough sense to quit sending in love offerings and such. In an interview with Kate, she said that she takes some of her money and goes to the spa monthly and Jon takes his and goes golfing. I can’t believe they would have the nerve to ask for more money and do things like that with it. Some of the people sending them money probably don’t even have the extra money to go to the spa theirselves. I wish people would open their eyes.

Just watched the new episode to see if possibly Jon had grown his balls back… NOPE he hasnt… he is even more of a jellyfish and hardly spoke at all. Kate has taken the life and spirit right out of him.
Also.. If I were the tups dentist I would have referred Kate somewhere else. Kate is full of herself, she thinks she is the queen of the world and I wouldnt want her in my office. (why rock the boat, lets face it, Kate upsets people..its like her hobby,… she likes being that way.)

Its all about the money with Kate it seems. I guess to Jon and Kate money and perks are more important than your kids. Its past the point of being fixed. the kids now expect to be the center of attention and given trips, toys, special perks, they think its normal life. When it abruptly stops its not going to be good. They havent been taught to be nurturing and caring, or have a normal social life. Sorry to say but they are slowly turning into brats. Add Kates ever inflating ego to that and what a mess.
Its like watching an out of control train thats loose, and waiting for it to jump the track.
Here is a little advice for people who are consumed with jealousy of the Gosslins. Pick up your remote and turn the channel or turn the thing off. It would take a lot less effort than the herculean one going on to trash these people on the internet. I have no doubt that the prying eyes of the tv show has changed these people, but that should not invite the level of hatred that is out there now. So they make money-it still is a free country, supposedly. If you don’t like the money they are making quit watching and they soon won’t be making it. I am worn out from reading this trash, so enjoy my one and only post. Turn off the tube and go find a life of your own.

I agree Linda. These sponsors don’t realize what fools they are for using Kate as their spokesperson. As hard as times are going to get they don’t need that strike against them to. I no longer use P&G products, for one thing..if P&G approves of the kind of behavior Kate exhibits then I want nothing to do with them period.

Watched the show today , also saw hailey on E entertainment. Talk about night and day. Kate hurting no one and hailey doing her best to hurt someone she doesnt even know. Anyway, Nice to see Kate so happy and smiling. Such a strong woman. She’s handled this with such class its unreal . LUV KATE AND 8. Hope they renew it.
