Has there ever been a good comedy spin-off with the exception of Frasier?
NBC is in talks of a spin-off of The Office, similar to the way it happened with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice last year. Would it really work though? Grey’s had several strong characters that’d survive being the leads in their own show, but does the same go for The Office? To much of Michael and/or Dwight would get old really fast, if they lost Jim or Pam (or put them on completely different shows) half of their viewers will stop watching, and I don’t think any of the other characters are strong enough to pull of the lead.
With that said, here’s what E!Online is saying about the spinoff:
- It will premiere immediately following the Super Bowl in January ‘09.
- Greg Daniels is “behind” the idea, even though he and his writing team will clearly be kind of busy doing the 28 half-hours of the original series that NBC has requested for the ‘08-’09 season.
- Per Ben Silverman, it is “very likely” you will see some Dunder-Mifflin-ites cross over to the new series.”
And, just because, here’s some pics of Jim/John Krasinski from Men’s Health 2 months ago:

BTW, in the interview they state that “Krasinski freely acknowledges certain parallels between his life and that of his alter ego on The Office. For instance, he knows he must branch out from the hit show before it becomes his own private Dunder-Mifflin — the no-hope office-supply firm Jim works for.” I hope this doesn’t mean he wants to leave the show any time soon!!
