forget the recession…keep on drinkin’

posted by admin

in fiscal fasting, rankings

Usually I ignore Forbes lists.  They typically make “best” and “worst” articles and the DC/Baltimore area is always pathetically consistent in the “worst” categories.  That being said…they did something right!

wine

Click here for 25 great bottles of wine, all under $25! First on my list:

“Alois Lageder 2006 “Haberle” Pinot Bianco, Alto Adige | $18

From the sub-Alpine northeast of Italy–in the great overlap of Italian and Austrian culture–and biodynamicist Lageder, this food-flexible wine delivers a ripe, Chardonnay-like yellow apple and peach fruit but in an elegant and more tapered, cool-climate style. (Dalla Terra Winery Direct)”

Until then I’ll keep on nursing my temporary favorite, Bud Light w/ Lime  :)

BusinessWeek 50 rankings…Pepsi beats Coke!

posted by admin

in rankings

Pepsi wins again!  BusinessWeek put out a list of their top 50 businesses (focusing on average return on capital and growth).  Pepsi’s ranking: 31.  Coke: 45.  Barely makes the list!  Here’s their little blurb on PepsiCo:

Industry: Consumer Staples
Sales: $39.5 billion
Net Income: $5.7 billion

The Cola Wars may be back, but today’s PepsiCo (PEP) actually derives more revenue from food products than from fizzy beverages. And PepsiCo has a propitious portfolio, big on healthier snacks and strong in faster-growth markets outside the U.S. CEO Indra Nooyi, born and raised in India, has an international background that suits the company perfectly; most consumer-products companies have seen a slowdown at home as a recession begins to take hold. Indeed, last year PepsiCo’s international sales made up 40% of revenue and grew 26%, or almost three times the rate of domestic sales. The looming challenge: dealing with record-high prices for essential commodities such as corn and wheat.”

This would be a little better if I weren’t drinking a Cherry Coke right now  :)

Happy April Fools day!

posted by admin

in rankings

For your viewing pleasure, here’s a link to the 10 Best April Fools’ Gags, compliments of Wired Magazine.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

1976 At precisely 9:47 am on April 1, Pluto will pass behind Jupiter, causing a brief reduction in Earth’s gravitational pull. Astronomer Patrick Moore urges his BBC Radio audience to jump into the air at that exact moment to experience a floating sensation. At 9:48, dozens of light-headed listeners begin calling the station to report their success.”

2003 Bill Gates is dead, shot by a lone gunman at a charity event in Los Angeles. After three South Korean networks broadcast the story on local TV, ensuing panic triggers a 1.5 percent drop in the Seoul stock exchange — a value loss of $3 billion. Just another Windows-related crash.”

best songs of 2007…who is working at rolling stone??

posted by admin

in rankings

Rolling Stone may also not be the magazine for me.  I was browsing their top 100 songs of 2007, and I’m not sure where I was last year because I haven’t heard most of the songs.  Maybe I’m listening to the wrong radio stations, but this is Annapolis, not the middle of nowhere…how am I so out of the loop?

Here are their top 10:

  1. Jay-Z – ‘Roc Boys’
  2. Randy Newman – ‘A Few Words in Defense of Our Country’
  3. Rihanna – ‘Umbrella’
  4. Justice – ‘D.A.N.C.E’
  5. Bright Eyes – ‘Four Winds’
  6. Lil Wayne – ‘Dough is What I Got’
  7. Amy Winehouse – ‘Rehab’
  8. Bruce Springsteen – ‘Long Walk Home’
  9. M.I.A.- ‘Boyz’
  10. John Fogerty – ‘Gunslinger’

Here are the ones that got stuck my head the most this year:

  1.  Kanye West – Stronger (got overplayed but loved it for awhile)
  2. Fall Out Boy – Bang the Doldrums (not loved by radio stations but loved by me)
  3. Rihanna – Umbrella (this is the only one we agree on)
  4. Justin Timberlake – What Goes Around…Comes Around
  5. Wyclef Jean – Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill) (this one is STILL stuck in my head, months later)
  6. The Fratellis – For the Girl (NOTE: thought this one was released in ‘06 but Rolling Stones had one of their songs listed)
  7. Britney Spears – Piece of me
  8. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova – Falling Slowly (from the movie Once)
  9. One Republic – Apologize (are there any up-tempo remixes of this one?)
  10. Linkin Park – What I’ve Done (love the background Twilight Zone-ish tune)

Click here for the complete list by Rolling Stone.  Any songs I’m missing?

Does Rolling Stone hate Wyclef??

My big fat unoriginal family

posted by admin

in rankings

I was looking at an article listing the most popular baby names of the last century.  For kicks I looked at 1950, which is the closest year listed compared to when my parents were born.  Sure enough, my Mom’s name was #1 at the time, as was my Dad’s name.  Hmm…this explains why I feel so uncreative in drawing class.  I can officially blame the genes now  :)
