words of wisdom (and a comcast rant)

If you’re going to move and you frequently do work online from home, you should probably call Comcast a month or so in advance to make sure they’re able to install cable/internet.  Otherwise you might wind up spending some evenings at Panera, pathetically buying one of the cheapest things in the store so that you can score some free Wi-Fi.  Now if you will all excuse me, I need to get back to work (and get back to slowly sipping my $1.79 lemonade)

To those who are reading this advice too late, here’s a list of the places that offer free internet:

Atlanta Bread
Caribou Coffee – Lower left corner…enter your zip and check “Wireless Internet” (Free for the first hour, $1.50 minimum purchase after.)
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
COSI Coffee and Sandwiches
– Find the closest location, click on it (will tell you if Internet is available)
Panera Bread
Starbucks – **Free for 2 hrs/day if you register a Starbucks card and use it at least once a month

stop saying the govt wastes our tax dollars!

in career, money

When I started my job and had to join a “water club” for $12/month to enjoy filtered water during the day, not a big deal b/c the only other option is a water fountain there with a sign above it saying “Run overnight water for one minute before consumption.” There’s also a coffee club, which I vetoed in favor of buying Nescafe and half & half from Costco. Anyway, I can deal with this stuff.

Today I walked into the ladies room and found this sign:

bathroom note

Sooo…stop bitching about the govt wasting money…I’m afraid they’ll take away toilet paper next…

business owner

Not sure how much I’ll be able to blog from now on…after all, I’ve got a business to run  ;-)

j/k…I was forced into this, I’m pretty sure it boils down to the govt wanting me to pay a business tax.  Unless I did it wrong, I paid the usual 30ish% on what I made in an estimated quarterly, and now this “business tax” tacks on another 15% off of the original amount earned.  Total amount the govt gets: 45%.  Ouch.

design your dream job (and why i don’t read redbook)

Long story short, I had a bunch of airline miles expiring and cashed in by choosing a 1-year subscription to about 5 magazines. Typically I put one in the bathroom and go through a couple of pages each morning while I blow-dry my hair. I try to give each one the benefit of the doubt and read at least the most interesting 2 or 3 articles before it hits the recycling bin. Anyway, when I saw the headline “Design your Dream Job – Get inspired by 10 amazing women I did just that”, I was intrigued. Here is a summary of the results:

  • Woman 1: had kids, quit her job, took time while staying at home to decide what she really wanted to do
  • Woman 2: had a kid, began researching recipes and eventually took the time while staying at home to develop recipes that could make her money
  • woman 3: had a kid, took some time off to decide what she wanted to do
  • …and so on…

see the pattern? And now, the number one reason of “things that pulled me through the launch” is…(drumroll)…”A great husband who shares 50-50 in the house and allows me to use our life savings”

Obviously this magazine isn’t for me. Or almost anyone in their 20s. Umm…or anyone trying to deal with the upcoming recession.
